Sylvanian FAQ

What are Sylvanian Families & Calico Critters?

Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters are miniature collectable flocked animals that live in Sylvania and Cloverleaf Corners. All critters (used to collectively refer to Sylvanian and Calico items) have movable heads and most have movable arms and legs as well. They can be positioned to sit, stand, lay down, wave, reach, etc.

Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters also include very detailed miniature accessories from necessities such as beds to fun indulgences such as ice cream parlors.

What’s the difference between Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters?

The difference is basically the name. They are made by the same company, but International Playthings (the US and Canadian distributor) does not have the legal right to use the name Sylvanian Families so they call them Calico Critters instead.  The items under the name of Sylvanian Families are not normally sold in the US; they are items that we have imported from other countries.

Sylvanian Families are usually more expensive than Calico Critters mostly because they are a great deal more expensive for us to get  in stock than Calico Critters.

Some of our customers say that they notice a quality difference between Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families. They say that the Sylvanian items are “fluffier” and better made than Calico Critters. We at Caroline’s Gifts have only noticed that the JP figures are usually a little better made than the UK and CC versions and that CC sets that do not have UK or JP counterparts are usually not as creative and accessory packed as CC items that are also sold in the UK and JP. Of course, we don’t get to play with critters everyday like some of our customers. ;-)

What are the different figure sizes?

·          Adult figures include the Mother and Father and are usually about 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall but can be as large as the Gray Bear parents (about 4 inches or 10.5 cm) or as small as the Owl parents (about 2 inches or 5 cm).

·          Grandparents and Older Brother and Sister figures are slightly smaller than adult figures but larger than brothers and sisters. These are the rarest size, and only a handful of families have either one.

·          Brother and Sister figures are more constant than the adults and are usually around 2 1/2 inches (6 1/2 cm) tall not counting any ears.

·          Baby figures can be as tall as 1 5/8 inches (4 cm) standing or as short as 1 1/4 inches (3 cm) when in the crawling position—not including any ears.

What do the different versions mean?

·          JP Version items were made for distribution in Japan. Figures are slightly taller than their UK and US counterparts, usually have flat hands, and have no official individual names. Items come in Japanese packaging.

·          UK Version items were made for distribution in the United Kingdom and come in English packaging. Except for babies, UK figures have cupped hands.

·          CC Version items were made for distribution in the United States and Canada and come in Calico Critter English/French packaging. Except for babies, CC figures have cupped hands.

·          TWN Version items were made for distribution in Taiwan. The figures are UK or CC version but in Japanese packaging.

·          EU Version items were made for distribution on mainland Europe. The wording on the packaging is mostly English.

What’s with all the babies?

Babies are definitely the most popular items in Sylvania, and they are rewarded for this with tons of fun accessories and lots of different versions.

·          Twins are most common with CC and JP families. There are three different possible combinations—sleeping baby with crawling baby, sleeping baby with sitting baby, and crawling baby with sitting baby. Their heads can turn, but their limbs can’t move.

·          JP Babies are sold without accessories and are fully posable with movable heads, arms, and legs.

·          UK Babies are sold with a small crib or blanket and a bottle. Every once in a while you’ll run across one produced years ago that is standing with only a head that moves, but all UK babies in production today are fully posable with movable arms, legs, and heads.

·          BCC stands for Baby Carry Case. With these sets you get a baby either sitting or on tip toes, a baby accessory, a small clear plastic carry case, and sometimes a bottle or pacifier. These babies can usually only move their heads.

·          Diary Babies are produced for Japan and represent different months of the year. They are standing babies dressed for the different months in small clear plastic carry cases. These babies can usually only move their heads.
